Nkure Therapeutics, an NK cell therapy company, has announced the closure of its pre–Series A round with participation from Endiya Partners, Kotak Investment Advisors, Featherlite and a few angel investors.

Define Ventures, a VC firm based in Silicon Valley, has recently announced the closing of Fund III and Opportunities Fund, raising a total of $460M to fund innovation in healthcare. The firm invests in early-stage digital health startups, including those in incubation, seed, series A, and series B stages.

Vice Ventures has announced closing of a second $25M fund, New York-based early-stage venture capital fund that aims to deliver superior returns by investing in good companies operating in superficially “bad” industries including alcohol, cannabis, energy, harm-reducing nicotine, psychedelics, sextech, skill-based betting, sports betting, MDMA, and ketamine.

Global Funding:

Gather Health, a socially-focused primary care solution for older adults, has recently opened its first primary care practice in Quincy, MA. after successfully raising over $15M in Series A funding.

Montréal-based healthtech startup Eli, which provides solutions for saliva-based hormone testing, has raised $5 million CAD in all-primary seed funding.

Little Journey, a mobile application designed to help children and their families prepare for surgical procedures, and other healthcare interactions, has raised £2.5M in a funding led by Octopus Ventures.

New tool calculates the economic value of breastfeeding for mothers and society. The MMT shows that breastfeeding is responsible for approximately 35.6 billion liters of milk a day. This figure represents about half the potential production under optimal circumstances. The human performance company Whoop has introduced a new stress monitor feature and breathwork protocols in partnership with American neuroscientist Andrew Huberman. Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Limited announced that one of its wholly-owned subsidiaries has launched a novel ophthalmology treatment, Cequa, in India for patients who have dry eye disease (DED) with inflammation, a commonly occurring condition. Cequa is the first dry eye treatment available in India that is delivered with nanomicellar (Ncell) technology.

Eli Lilly and Company and Amphastar Pharmaceuticals, Inc. have entered into a definitive agreement for Lilly to divest Baqsimi worldwide to Amphastar, a global pharmaceutical company focused on developing, manufacturing, and marketing injectable, intranasal, and inhalation products including experience with a glucagon product.

MIT researchers have developed a wearable patch that applies painless ultrasonic waves to the skin, creating tiny channels that drugs can pass through. This approach could lend itself to delivery of treatments for a variety of skin conditions, and could also be adapted to deliver hormones, muscle relaxants, and other drugs.

Government News:

The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on April 26 approved the National Medical Devices Policy (NMDP), 2023, with an aim to help the growth of the sector from the present $11 billion to $50 billion in next five years. The policy aims to put in place a comprehensive set of focus areas for growth of the sector in a coordinated manner.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 6th edition of Advantage Healthcare India (AHCI) 2023, a G20 co-branded event through a video message. With the theme of ‘One Earth, One Health’, the purpose of the two-day AHCI event is to showcase India as the new hub of Medical Value Travel and its emergence as a major hub for world-class healthcare and wellness services.

Research, Insights, and Market Projections:

Researchers from Tel Aviv University have presented a new approach to the treatment of ovarian cancer using RNA-based nanodrugs, demonstrating an 80 per cent survival rate in lab models. In a study, published in the scientific journal Science Advances, the protein CKAP5 (cytoskeleton-associated protein) was used for the first time as a therapeutic target for RNA-based nanodrugs.

Patients undergoing fertility treatment lack critical financial, emotional, and clinical support, a new report has found. The report, conducted by Maven Clinic, examined 500 women from the US who pursued or considered pursuing fertility treatment and found that 97 percent of them did not have all the information needed when first considering treatment.
