India Funding News:

A unit of Adar Poonawalla-led Serum Institute of India, the world’s biggest vaccine maker, will double its investment to $300 million (Rs 2,458 crore) in one of Biocon Ltd’s subsidiaries that is also backed by private equity investors. Biocon Biologics Ltd and Serum Institute of Life Sciences (SILS) have agreed to withdraw their original deal announced in September 2021 and have instead stitched a new transaction.

Global Funding:

Morgan Health, a business unit of JPMorgan Chase focused on improving employer-sponsored healthcare, has invested $25M in Kindbody, a leading fertility clinic network and family-building benefits provider for employers.

Practice Better, a comprehensive platform for health and wellness professionals has announced a $27M growth investment led by Five Elms Capital, following a $1 million investment from Disruption Ventures in 2021.

TARA Mind, a mental health company focused on providing safe and affordable access to psychedelic-assisted therapy, has secured $3 million in pre-seed funding from Red Cell Partners, an incubation firm that invests in technology-led companies that bring advancements to healthcare and national security.

Amorai, a company focused on health and well-being based in San Francisco, has recently secured an undisclosed amount of funding in its pre-seed round.

Cyclotears eye drops would be the first dry eye therapy in the world that incorporates the company’s indigenously developed proprietary self-emulsifying drug delivery system (SEDDS) technology.

Swiss pharma major Novartis AG has received an Indian patent for its NOD like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome inhibitors which could be used to treat a large number of inflammatory diseases which are caused by a faulty NLRP3 pathway. Companies including Novartis have been pursuing the potential for NLRP3 inflammasome inhibitors to find new ways to treat chronic diseases from Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, to osteoarthritis among others.

Royal Philips has announced the launch of Philips Image Guided Therapy Mobile C-arm System 1000 – Zenition 10, a new addition to the company’s Zenition mobile C-arm series. Based on Philips’ state-of-the-art flat panel detector technology, Zenition 10 helps to expand patient access to routine surgical care and minimally invasive procedures.

Government News:

The Union Cabinet approved the National Medical Devices Policy, 2023, which aims to reduce India’s heavy import dependence in this sector. The National Medical Devices Policy, 2023 is expected to facilitate growth of the medical devices sector to meet the public health objectives of access, affordability, quality and innovation. According to the government data, the market for medical devices in India was estimated to be $11 billion (approximately, ₹ 90,000 crore) in 2020, accounting for 1.5% of the global market.

AIIMS New Delhi and India Medtronic Private Limited, wholly owned subsidiary of Medtronic plc, announced the opening of a state-of-the-art surgical robotics training centre at AIIMS, New Delhi. The centre will provide surgeons with best-in-class training in robotic-assisted surgery. It is the first such centre at AIIMS utilizing Medtronic’s Hugo robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) system, which was first introduced in India in September 2021.

Practo, India’s leading integrated healthcare company, has announced that its practice management software—Ray is now compliant with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).
