💰Funding In India: FemTech, Wellness, and Fitness

  • Portl, the creator of intelligent fitness mirrors, successfully closed a $3 million funding round, by Bharat Innovation Fund. This financing round also saw contributions from Kalaari Capital and the T-Hub Foundation.
  • Chennai headquartered pathology and radiology chain Aarthi Scans is in talks to raise funding and has been in early stage discussions with a few Private Equity firms.

🌎💸  Global Funding

  • Leading Biotech startup CUTISS, at the forefront of skin regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, has announced the successful first closing of CHF 25 million in its Series C funding round. This milestone brings the total raised to CHF 92 million, supporting its efforts as it enters Phase 3 clinical trials.
  • Natural Cycles, a Stockholm, Sweden-based women’s health company that developed a birth control app, raised $55M in Series C funding.The round was led by Lauxera Capital Partners, with participation from Point72 Private Investments and a revolving debt facility from J.P. Morgan
  • The US digital health start-up Acclinate has raised US$7m in Series A funding to improve equity in clinical trials. Acclinate aims to drive diversity in clinical trials with a community engagement platform that promises to help make existing trials more inclusive and plan more diverse studies moving forward.
  • ifeel, a Madrid, Spain-based provider of a mental health solution, raised $20M in Series B funding. The round, which brought the total amount to $40M, was led by FinTLV Ventures and Korelya Capital, with participation from existing investors SCOR Ventures, Nauta and UNIQA Ventures.
  • Matter Bio, a NYC-based biotech company dedicated to preserving genome integrity and extending healthy human lifespan, raised $7M in Seed funding.

  • Early menstruation, or periods, in young girls has been linked to childhood obesity and a higher risk of adverse health outcomes, such as cardiovascular disease and cancer, a new study has found. The research was done on more than 70,000 women in the US.
  • Twenty per cent of cancer patients who called an NGO-run helpline to seek a second opinion were below 40 years of age, indicating a rise of cancer incidences amongst younger people, data from the organisation stated. There were 1,368 callers between March 1 and May 15, according to the Cancer Mukt Bharat Foundation, launched by a group of oncologists.
  • According to recent study, the global immuno-oncology (IO) market size was estimated at USD 43.73 billion in 2023 and is projected to hit around USD 284.29 billion by 2033, growing at a CAGR of 23.12% during the forecast period from 2024 to 2033.
  • Wellness trends are putting women’s lives at risk, experts have said, amid warnings that a growing number of young people are turning to social media for health advice. Inaccurate health information and hacks like the “period cancelling craze”, which encourages women to consume a combination of jelly powder, lemon juice and ibuprofen to reduce menstrual flow, have taken social media by storm.
  • Researchers in the UK are to investigate the function of gut bacteria in breast cancer and how it could be used to fight against the disease. Bacteria living in our gut can affect our immune system and previous research in other cancers has shown a connection between healthier gut bacteria and better overall outcomes for patients.
  • Melinda French Gates will be donating $1 billion over the next two years to individuals and organizations working on behalf of women and families globally, including on reproductive rights in the United States.It’s the second billion-dollar commitment French Gates has personally made in the past five years. In 2019, she pledged over 10 years to expand women’s power and influence.
  • Same-sex couples with non-transmissible HIV will now be able to donate eggs or sperm and become parents. People with HIV will able to donate their sperm or eggs to their partners, as the law in the UK is updated.
  • The U.S. cell culture market is anticipated to experience significant growth over the next decade. Valued at USD 6.11 billion in 2023, the market is projected to reach USD 15.89 billion by 2033, reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.03% from 2024 to 2033.
  • Parkinson’s disease affects more than 8.5 million people worldwide and its prevalence has doubled in the past 25 years. Parkinson’s symptoms such as tremors, slowness and stiffness are caused by low levels of dopamine in the body. 
  • On the hottest days, risk of hospitalisation for people with metabolic disorders such as those of sugar and blood pressure, and obesity, almost doubled as compared to days recording comfortable temperatures, a new study has found.
  • The number of femtech companies incorporated in France jumped by almost 22 per cent in 2024, a new report has found. The report found that there were 140 French femtech start-ups listed as of April 20, almost 22 per cent more than in 2023.

  • The Australian health management app Ovum has entered its pilot phase as it looks to “reshape” women’s health by closing the gender health gap. Ovum seeks to develop Australia’s first-ever longitudinal AI women’s data set with the aim to address the gender health gap and transform how women experience healthcare.
  • In a groundbreaking move set to transform personal health management, the London-based tech start-up TaraCares has unveiled MIMI (Menopause Information and Management Interface), an advanced AI co-pilot designed to personalise science for users of its B2B2C hormone health and employee wellbeing platform MIMOSA. 
  • Vera Therapeutics, Inc, a late clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on developing and commercializing transformative treatments for patients with serious immunological diseases, announced that the US Food and Drug Administration has granted Breakthrough Therapy Designation to atacicept for the treatment of IgAN.

🇮🇳 Government News

  • The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has issued an updated version of the Guidance for Industry for Biologicals after 16 years from the introduction of the previous version, in tune with the regulations and online application processes introduced in recent times.
  • The Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP) has directed the industry to file a self-declaration in a prescribed format in accordance with the procedure in the recently published new Uniform Code for Pharmaceutical Marketing Practices (UCPMP) within June 30, 2024.
  • Ministry of Ayush organises sensitisation event for insurance companies and Ayush hospital owners
