Welcome to our 200 new subscribers who joined us this last month! Every Friday we bring you a round-up of startup and investment stories, along with key insights from founders in FemTech and women’s health.

It’s been a whole year since we launched? Our mission from day one has been to change the conversation around women’s health, break taboos, and empower women worldwide. The reach we’ve achieved, it feels surreal. The impact we’ve made feels incredible –  We’re just getting started and are going global with our mission.

I’m only in year 1 of my 20-year plan. We’ve achieved milestones, but there are billions more to reach. Let’s go

💰Funding In India: FemTech, Wellness, and Fitness

  • Bain Capital-backed Emcure Pharmaceuticals has garnered Rs 583 crore from anchor investors a day before its initial share-sale offer opening for public subscription. The pharma firm has decided to allot 57.8 lakh equity shares to 48 funds at Rs 1,008 apiece.
  • Healthtech startup WatchYourHealth has raised $5 million in a funding round led by Cornerstone Ventures from India and Conquest Global from Singapore . The Mumbai-based startup will use the capital to scale its operations and expand its user base both domestically and internationally

🌎💸  Global Funding

  • Gzranza Bio, a San Francisco, CA-based therapeutic delivery platform developer, raised $7M+ in Seed funding. The round was led by Felicis and Refactor, with participation from Y Combinator, Metaplanet, Zeno Ventures, among others.
  • Amethyst Radiotherapy Group, a Pan European oncology company, secured a €300m financing agreement with Credit funds managed by Ares Management Corporation, a global alternative investment manager.

  • Millions of Americans struggle to fall or stay asleep, a new survey finds. Some struggle more mightily than others: Roughly 12% of Americans polled said they have been diagnosed with chronic insomnia, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) survey revealed.
  • A 30-minute sauna or warm bubble bath every day might help women of a certain age fend off unwanted weight gain.That’s the promising takeaway from a study in mice that shows the potential of heat treatments in postmenopausal women
  • Simple exercises performed during rounds of chemotherapy can help people avoid nerve damage normally associated with the cancer-killing drugs, a new study suggests.About twice as many cancer patients on chemo wound up with long-lasting nerve damage if they didn’t exercise, compared with two groups assigned different exercise regimens, researchers reported July 1 in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.
  • Benzodiazepines do not appear to increase dementia risk, but could have subtle long-term effects on brain structure, a new study reports.Researchers found no link between use of the sedative drug and a higher risk of dementia in a group of more than 5,400 adults in the Netherlands, according to findings published July 2 in the journal BMC Medicine.
  • Ultrasound cannot reliably rule out endometrial cancer in Black women given how readings are now assessed, a new study argues.Transvaginal ultrasound is commonly used to screen for cancer by measuring the thickness of the endometrium, the inner wall of the uterus.
  • A girl’s genetics can indirectly influence the age when she has her first period, by accelerating her weight gain in childhood, a new study finds.A number of other genes also can directly affect the age of puberty, some with profound effects, researchers added.More than 1,000 genetic variants are tied to the age of a girl’s first menstrual period, researchers discovered by analyzing the genes of about 800,000 women. About 600 of these variants were observed for the first time in this study.
  • Two well-known healthy diets can lower heart disease risk in people with type 1 diabetes, a new study says.People who ate similarly to the Mediterranean diet or the DASH diet had lower levels of blood markers that are used in clinical settings to assess heart health risk, researchers reported Sunday at a meeting of the American Society for Nutrition in Chicago.
  • Weight gain is a common side effect of antidepressants, but some types cause people to pack on pounds more than others, a new study says. Bupropion users are 15% to 20% less likely to gain a significant amount of weight than those taking the most common antidepressant, sertraline, researchers reported July 2 in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
  • Screening for chronic illnesses like diabetes or fatty liver disease could one day be as simple as checking the temperature of your nose, eyes or cheeks. The temperature of different parts of the face are associated with various chronic diseases, researchers reported July 2 in the journal Cell Metabolism.
  • A regulation allowing the use of brominated vegetable oil in food was revoked Tuesday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration after the agency concluded the additive was unsafe for human consumption.
  • Getting inked could make you sick.In a first-of-its-kind study, researchers detected bacteria in commercial tattoo and permanent makeup inks, demonstrating that they could cause human infections.

🌐 Global Companies:

  • The US fertility technology company TMRW Life Sciences has opened a new cryostorage facility for frozen sperm, eggs and embryos in Colorado. The biorepository in Boulder is TMRW’s second location alongside one in New York City in a growing network of offsite cryostorage offerings that use automated platforms for the management and storage of frozen specimens.
  • A new app designed to help pregnant women better monitor their health has launched in the US. BobiHealth aims to “transform” the way pregnant women monitor their health by providing insights into their health, monitoring for potential issues and alerting users when their health status could be something of concern.
  • The US digital health platform Emagine Solutions Technology has announced a new integration with Fitbit to address maternal health. The collaboration will allow users of Emagine’s The Journey Pregnancy app to better track and monitor their maternal health via Fitbit devices. 
  • Mira, a hormonal health company providing at-home reproductive health solutions, launched an online Hormone Health Clinic for Fertility aimed to help people – struggling to conceive.

🇮🇳 Government News

  • NITI Aayog has launched a three-month campaign from July 4, to September 30, 2024 under the name Sampoornata Abhiyan to undertake a sustained effort to achieve saturation of six key indicators in aspirational districts and six key indicators in aspirational blocks across the country.
  • Scientists at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have uncovered a brain circuit in primates that rapidly detects faces. The findings help not only explain how primates sense and recognize faces, but could also have implications for understanding conditions such as autism, where face detection and recognition are often impaired from early childhood. The Government of Kerala has decided to establish an Institute of Organ and Tissue Transplant at Kozhikode. It is being established as an Apex Institute for research, training and patient care in the area of organ transplantation and allied activities. This Apex Institute with skilled doctors, researchers and health workers can be developed as a Centre of Excellence.
