  • The Peterson Center on Healthcare has introduced the Peterson Health Technology Institute (PHTI), a non-profit venture aimed at assessing emerging healthcare technologies, with an initial $50M commitment.
  • California pregnancy care platform Mirvie has received a US$4.6m grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to study preeclampsia in Sub-Saharn Africa.

FemTech News:

  • According to a recent study, infertility may increase the probability of acquiring some menopausal symptoms such as mood swings, irritability, and difficulties sleeping.
  • Women suffering from endometriosis may be genetically predisposed to depression, anxiety and eating disorders, researchers have found. One in ten women lives with endometriosis, a chronic condition where endometrial-like tissue grows outside the uterus. Some may experience flare ups while menstruating, while others live with daily symptoms.
  • Less than a third of women who freeze their eggs return to use them, a new study has shown, as scientists caution against the idea of fertility. Of those who did return for fertility treatment less than half – 48 per cent – opted to use their frozen eggs. While some had intrauterine insemination, others went for other fertility treatments such as IVF. 
  • The FDA has approved the first oral medication indicated to treat postpartum depression (PPD) in adults. PPD is a major depressive episode that typically occurs after childbirth but can also begin during the later stages of pregnancy.

  • Amazon has teamed up with Maven Clinic to expand its fertility and family-building support programme in a bid to attract and retain employees.
  • The US women’s health company Agile Therapeutics has partnered with two telehealth platforms to expand patient access to its birth control patch.
  • BPEA Private Equity Fund VIII, known as BPEA EQT, is in the process of acquiring a majority stake in Indira IVF, India’s foremost fertility services provider valuing the firm at $1.1 billion.
  • The women’s health biotech start-up Celmatix and Brazilian pharma company Aché Laboratórios have announced a collaboration and license option agreement to investigate a novel melatonin receptor drug candidate to treat PCOS.

FemTech India Partner Company News:

  • Sirona Hygiene has partnered with Delhi International Airport Ltd and created India’s first customized feminine hygiene vending machines installed in washrooms for women at the airport.
  • Mylo App was spotlighted on Google Playstore’s spotlight section and was titled as “Behind the scenes with Mylo: Companion for Parents”
  • Femisafe was featured in Grihalakshmi- Kerala’s leading women’s magazine.

Drugs, Diagnostics, and Pharma:

  • Eli Lilly and Company announced the successful completion of its acquisition of DICE Therapeutics, Inc. The acquisition expands Lilly’s immunology portfolio to include DICE’s novel oral therapeutic candidates, including oral IL-17 inhibitors currently in clinical development, to treat chronic diseases in immunology.
  • SK bioscience, has decided to make an equity investment in Novavax, a global company advancing protein-based vaccines with its novel Matrix-M adjuvant, securing 6.5 million shares of common stock through a private placement.
  • Astex Pharmaceuticals (UK) (Astex), a pharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery and development of novel small molecule therapeutics for oncology and diseases of the central nervous system, announced an exclusive worldwide research collaboration and license agreement with MSD (Merck & Co., Inc.)

Research, Insights, and Market Projections:

  • Antidepressants are effective in treating depression and in preventing relapse of depression in ‘recurrent depressive disorder’. However, depression also occurs in the context of another serious mental illness called bipolar disorder or what used to be called earlier manic-depressive disorder.
  • As per a new study, 1 out of every three youngsters are suffering from adjustment problems. This demographic of adulthood is tribulated with the questions of money management, career anxiety, fading friendships, ageing parents, and depreciating self-worth.

  • The Lok Sabha has passed the Pharmacy (Amendment) Bill, 2023 as a special provision for persons registered or qualified under the Jammu and Kashmir Pharmacy Act, 2011 to get registered under the Pharmacy Act, 1948 subject to the condition that an application should be made within a period of one year from the commencement of the amended Act.
